Fall 2026 Undergraduate Courses

  • 101 – Introduction to Digital Humanities

    Lecture, 75 minutes; discussion, 75 minutes. Foundation course for students in Digital Humanities minor, providing theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding genesis of digital world. Use of contemporary cultural-historical methodology to focus on rise of new media and information technologies in 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, such as photography, film, radio, television, Internet, and World Wide Web and their impact on how individuals, groups, and cultures experienced their worlds. Letter grading.

  • 120 – Social Media Data Analytics

    Lecture, three hours; laboratory, one hour. Requisite: course 101 or consent of instructor. Social media data analytics, with focus on questions of power, privilege, identity, whose voices count and in what spaces, as well as how data science and digital humanities may be used to challenge power structures. Study of how social media has been used both to undermine and to support social justice and political change movements, ways in which social media data is currently used by corporate entities, and ethical data usage. Students learn digital research methods including quantitative and qualitative data analytics, statistics, as well as data visualization to examine social media data. Letter grading.

  • 121 – Race, Gender, and Data

    (Same as Community Engagement and Social Change M121.) Seminar, three hours. Requisite: course 101. Data plays a crucial role in political representation, governmental resource allocation, and policy decisions. Investigation of how data does or does not ascribe a quantitative value to a human life by employing a community-engaged emphasis to study how emerging digital models link data with social justice organizing. Students learn to read datasets produced by governmental entities such as the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Department of Health and Human Services. Assignments include working on a community-engaged data project that evaluates and addresses key concerns facing communities-of-color. Introduction to critical data studies and applied data ethics. Studio sessions include lessons on finding and analyzing datasets relevant to racial and gender justice themes; and to generating data visualizations, digital stories, and maps using the latest software tools. No prior knowledge of statistics or quantitative analysis is required. P/NP or letter grading.

  • 150-1 – Advanced Topics in Digital Humanities: Digital Musicology Methods and Resources

    Seminar, three hours. Requisite: course 101. Exploration of diverse ways in which computational tools, digital resources, and artificial intelligence are reshaping music research and practice. Examination of key methodologies from digitization and reconstruction of historical sounds to optical music recognition and computational analysis. Students produce and present digital musicology research project. Students select topic of interest and apply relevant methods learned in class. Students critically assess potential and limitations of digital approaches, and address ethical considerations. Exploration of evolving relationship between technology and music. No programming experience required. Designed for students with strong interest in music and willingness to engage with new technologies.

  • 150-2 – Advanced Topics in Digital Humanities: Artificial Intelligence and Automation in Humanities

    Seminar, three hours. Requisite: course 101. Large language models and image generators seem to be realizing visions and warnings of science fiction. Study asks how these systems’ accuracies, biases, and inner workings be measured enough to interrogate their value academically. Introduction to automated ways of working with difficult data types and tasks in digital humanities, examining history and critical conversations about artificial intelligence, automation, and data. Students compare different automated and manual methods of description, translation, transcription, classification, natural language processing, and image processing. Evaluation of their potential for use in archives, museums, educational environments, art, and other humanities. No experience or background in coding or artificial intelligence technologies required.

  • 160 – Introduction to Critical Cartography and Theories of Mapping

    Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course 101. Introduction to critical cartography and theories of mapping. Introduction to field of critical cartography and how mapping can be both a tool and a representation of power. Study of how maps are as much an erasure of places and peoples as they are representations of them. By understanding the history and development of cartography as a field, students are able to better apply critical analysis to completed maps, thinking through the perspective of a map-user as well as the mapping process of the mapmaker. Examination of so-called “non-Cartesian” cartography and non-archival forms of mapping such as performance cartography, art, textiles, and more. Students gain understanding of mapping as a practice and cartography as a science of practices, not representations by focusing on several cases around the world and during different historical periods. Concurrently scheduled with course C260. P/NP or letter grading.
