What is Splash? ( Check their bio for the links! )

Splash is a one-day educational outreach program with the mission of providing accessible and exciting learning experiences to high school students and leadership and teaching experiences to UCLA students. You get to design and teach your own class about anything you are passionate about or find useful, in your own style. Then, motivated and curious high school students take ownership of their own education and broaden their horizons by learning from you! Over 50 different college campuses around the nation and abroad are participating in this initiative. We invite you to come join our community of teachers and learners at the cutting-edge of making a difference in education!

When/Where is Splash?

This year Splash will take place on Saturday, April 20th, 2024 (9am to 5pm) on UCLA campus (Kaplan Hall).

What can I teach?

You can teach anything you want, for as long as you want, in whatever format you want! The classes can range from anything fun and non-academic – such as Skincare and Rhythm Gaming – to the most challenging and academic – such as Genetics and Quantum Mechanics. Technology is the most visible differentiator of the “digital” humanities, and is the focus of both curricular attention and anxiety among digital humanities practitioners. In practice, technology alone rarely makes or breaks DH projects. Whether or not a project achieves its stated goals, thoughtful project management and ethical collaboration practices can make the difference between an experience that is beneficial and generative, and one that is exploitative and nightmarish. This talk will focus on the Digital Humanities Role-Playing Game (#DHRPG) as a simulation that makes students grapple with the complex reality of managing projects with actual people, beyond the simplified framework of budgets, work plans, and charters. This game is a core component of “Project Management and Ethical Collaboration for Humanists”, offered biannually as part of Stanford’s DH Minor program. Reflecting on the game in the context of this course and DH pedagogy at Stanford more broadly, the talk will draw together narratives of DH failure, feminist infrastructure, critical making, emergency response DH, and grappling with the (in)famous question, “What is digital humanities?”, and its corollary, “Why do we do this work?”

Speaker Bio:
Quinn Dombrowski (non-binary, any pronouns are fine) is the Academic Technology Specialist in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages, and in the Library, at Stanford University. Prior to coming to Stanford in 2018, Quinn’s many DH adventures included supporting the high-performance computing cluster at UC Berkeley, running the DiRT tool directory with support from the Mellon Foundation, writing books on Drupal for Humanists and University of Chicago library graffiti, and working on the program staff of Project Bamboo, a failed digital humanities cyberinfrastructure initiative.

Professor Seu is a current Faculty at Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts & also teaches at UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts (DMA) and the Yale School of Art. They were a DMA graduate (B.A.) themself! They embrace a multi-hyphenate approach to their work, including but not limited to teaching Art & Design as a professor, curating art shows, and creating unique projects.

Professor Seu published Cyberfeminism Index with the hopes that it will serve as an encyclopedia that collects and revises the history of online activism and net art (internet-based art) that pertains to practicing Feminism in our digital spaces for the past three decades.

So… what is Cyberfeminism? Cyberfeminism is a very porous branch of Feminism; it is not a distinct movement but rather an amalgamation of various efforts that are united with the goal of creating an understanding of the critical use of technology to support better gender equality, which could be used across time zones and time frames. For example, Cyberfeminism closely examines the feedback loop of how the internet impacts society and how people impact the internet through their digital traces.

Cyberfeminism shares similar goals with the field of Digital Humanities; both disciplines are constantly thinking about how Humanities can be shaped via digital tools. Similarly to how Digital Humanities could be used as a new approach to constantly revising the history of Humanities, Cyberfeminism index essentially does the same thing within the domain of internet history.

Highlighting another student #dhproject !

In the Winter Quarter, UCLA DH students enrolled in Digital Humanities 120: Social Media Data Analytics with Dr. Ashley Sanders @dr.ashleysanders

In this class, students learned how to conduct network and sentiment analysis of social media data, specifically Twitter data.
The group of students we are highlighting today analyzed social media data in regard to education and the marketing field, and the overlap between these two sectors does understand how these sectors interpreted the release of Chat GPT!

Jefferson Shared "One of the reasons why we chose to focus on the marketing and education sectors is because of Chat GPT's expertise in working with language, its ability to conversate and to ideate. Both marketing and education are two fields that can heavily benefit from these attributes, therefore a prime space for our inquiry. "

Noa decided to take Dh 120 since "I was interested in learning more about the methodologies used to study social media data and how it can be used to get a better understanding of our world. I was especially interested in learning about sentiment analysis and network analysis."

Jefferson will be attending graduate school at Emily Carr University of Arts + Design and will be earning a Master's of Design. He hopes to use his experience working in the music industry and his knowledge of design to contribute and innovate in the music industry.

Noa is a 3rd-year Cognitive Science major and Dh minor interested in data science, behavior, product management, and design.

"Digital humanities has given me a window into so many incredible data visualization tools, and given me a critical lens for interpreting data. I am interested in how data can be used to better understand ourselves and society."

Today we would like to highlight one of our #Dhstudents Justin C.M. Brown! Click the link in the bio to see his virtual gallery or visit his Instagram @jcmbmade !

Justin is a 3rd year Transfer (@SMCedu) majoring in Sociology and minoring in Digital Humanities. Justin is also a visual artist, musician, and writer.
His personal research explores the social and psychological benefits of creativity and artistic identity. His latest multimedia project is titled “ICE: Inherent Creative Energy”, which is a series of paintings created using an uncommon method of diluting and freezing acrylic paint in ice cube trays. These paint cubes were then allowed to melt and dry with minimal interaction or intervention.

Throughout the process, Justin took copious photos and videos of the artwork revealing itself. Once the series was complete, Justin arranged a selection of these pictures and videos in an immersive 3D virtual gallery using the Artsteps VR platform (@artsteps_stories). Justin had this to say about creating a virtual gallery: “It was so much fun to put together and really makes me proud to see my artwork in such a professional aesthetic. I also appreciate the accessibility of virtual galleries to easily share my arranged work with global audiences.”

He also arranged all of the pictures and videos into a 99-panel Instagram grid. In the DH minor, Brown hopes to develop the skills necessary to conduct and present research on the topics of creativity and artistic identity within a sociological framework.

“Beyond the artwork itself, I really hope that this project encourages at least a few people to experiment with their own artistic ideas and creativity, maybe for the first time. I believe that students of every major each have their own unique forms of artistic expression within their discipline, and I say Lean In! Make art about what you know and what you care about!”

Today we will be highlighting a project from one of our own #Dhstudents, Eliza Franklin, and her project Heart of Dixie: Alabama Lynchings, an Analysis of the stolen legacy of Willie Jenkins.

In this compelling Project, Eliza analyzes the historical and lived consequences of lynchings in Alabama between 1878-1943. She intentionally begins the project with a heat map that includes the name of the victim, the date of the lynching, and the alleged offense.

Among the many victims of lynchings is Eliza’s great-grandfather, William “Willie Lee” Jenkins. Eliza creates a map visualizing the lynching trail of her great-grandfather, William Jenkins.

Through this compelling project and narrative, Eliza demands viewers reconsider how we have historically looked at lynchings as one instance of white terror, but neglect the “stolen legacy” that descants must undergo.

Photography as Data?! Oftentimes when we think of

Photography as Data?!
Oftentimes when we think of datasets, we think of files filled with rows of numbers that are then used for statistical analysis. Or we may think of qualitative data that is then transcribed.
However, The field of digital humanities proves that anything can be data, including photography and photographic archives. These archives are then used for social-cultural analysis, visualizations, or image analysis where archives are contained in a database that can be used for facial recognition software.

Today we highlight the Scholar W.E.B Du Bois, one of the most important scholars of the 20th century, and a pioneer in Digital Humanities. Du Bois did so at the world-renowned 1900 Paris Exposition, demonstrating photographs and data visualizations that challenged the stereotypes African Americans continued to face after the abolishment of slavery. Du Bois’s research for the 1900 Paris exposition was a crucial stepping stone for his career.
