TARC: Recovering Women’s Stories in Ottoman Algeria Through Text Mining & Network Analysis
Presenter: Ashley Sanders Garcia
Description: Algerian women were essential intercultural mediators and conduits to power in the Ottoman-Algerian world between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, but they were often overlooked by historians because they are not the primary subject of colonial archives. Because they are mentioned indirectly or in relation to male figures in the sources, network analysis of the individuals mentioned in these texts allows us to discover the stories of both named and unnamed women. This talk will describe how “Early Modern Women in Ottoman-Algeria” employs user-friendly tools, including Recogito, Gephi, and Tableau to recover the experience of marginalized peoples through text mining and network analysis.
This talk is free and open to all interested UCLA faculty, students, and staff.
